Transporting Partial Containers of Freight

Transporting non-full containers, also known as Less than Container Load (LCL), requires specialized handling to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of smaller freight volumes. Here’s an overview of common transportation options for LCL.

LCL Carriers:

These are specialized carriers that combine multiple shippers’ goods into a single container. Each shipper pays for the volume or weight they occupy, making it cost-effective for businesses not needing a full container.

Cargo Vans:

Ideal for smaller shipments, cargo vans are designed for quick deliveries within cities and nearby regions. They can navigate urban areas easily and have quick loading and unloading times.

Box Trucks:

A step above cargo vans in size, box trucks are versatile and suitable for transporting palletized goods or larger items. They are frequently used for LCL shipments due to their adaptability.

Dry Vans:

These enclosed trailers are commonly used for transporting non-perishable goods. For LCL, dry vans can carry shipments from multiple clients, ensuring protection from weather and theft.

Refrigerated Trucks or Reefers:

For partial shipments of perishable goods, reefers are ideal. They maintain a controlled temperature, ensuring the safety of goods like food, pharmaceuticals, and certain chemicals.

Lift-Gate Services:

Many LCL shipments might not have a loading dock at pickup or delivery points. Trucks equipped with lift-gates can handle such scenarios, allowing for ground-level loading and unloading.

Consolidation Warehouses:

Before being transported, LCL shipments often go through consolidation warehouses. Here, goods from various shippers are combined and loaded into containers efficiently, ensuring optimal space utilization.

Cross-Docking Facilities:

For LCL, cross-docking is vital. It involves the reception of goods and their immediate shipment without long-term storage, ensuring faster deliveries for smaller shipments.

(LCL) Less than Container Loads of Fright:

For LCL shipments, the transportation strategy centers around combining multiple smaller freight volumes efficiently and safely. While these shipments might not always move in dedicated shipping containers, the industry offers a wide range of tailored options to ensure the cargo reaches its destination timely and intact.

Transporting Full Shipping Containers

A full shipping container is typically transported on a chassis, which is a type of trailer designed specifically for carrying shipping containers. There are various types of chassis tailored for different sizes and types of containers.

Container Truck or Container Chassis:

These are specialized trucks designed specifically to carry shipping containers. They come with locking mechanisms to securely hold the container in place during transport.

Drayage Trucks:

These are used for transporting containers over short distances, especially within ports, between ports and nearby storage facilities, or between ports and rail terminals.

Semi-Truck with a Flatbed Trailer:

While flatbeds are versatile and can carry many types of cargo, they can also be used to transport shipping containers. The container is usually secured with chains or straps to ensure it remains stable during transport.

Sliding Chassis or Extendable Chassis:

These are adjustable chassis that can be resized to fit 20-foot, 40-foot, or even 45-foot containers.

Tri-Axle Chassis:

Designed for heavier containers, especially those that are overweight, this chassis has three axles to distribute the load more evenly.

Drop Frame Chassis:

This type of chassis is designed for transporting taller containers, allowing them to sit lower and thus comply with height regulations on the road.

(FCL) Full Container loads of Fright:

For transporting a full shipping container over long distances, it will typically be loaded onto a container truck or onto a flatbed attached to a semi-truck. If the container is being transported internationally or across long distances domestically, it might also be moved via rail or ship at some stage of its journey.
